Australian mosaic artist Julie Aldridge says her original artwork Sunset Wave has been copied and reproduced online for more than a decade. The artwork, originally created for an exhibition in South Australia, was later sold to a private collector in California. Over the years, copies of the design began appearing on Pinterest, quilts, canvases, coloring books, and other products without her permission.
In 2026, Aldridge discovered her mosaic printed on rugs sold by more than twenty different sellers on Temu. Although she submitted copyright complaints through Temu's intellectual property reporting system and many listings were removed, new listings continued to appear from different sellers.
The case highlights a growing challenge for independent artists: removing one infringing listing does not always stop the artwork from being uploaded again by other marketplace sellers. Copyright experts interviewed by ABC News noted that online marketplaces have improved takedown procedures, but artists still face significant challenges monitoring repeated infringement across global platforms.
